Drop City Yacht Club Bring Explosive Engery At The House Of Blues

Last night, Drop City Yacht Club ferociously opened up for the Goodie Mob at The House Of Blues in Los Angeles. Their high-energy performance showcased their multiple talents.

It was clear that perhaps many of the Goodie Mob fans in the audience were not too familiar with their body of work, other than their popular song “Crickets.” However by the end of the show, it seemed Drop City Yacht Club won them over with their energetic performance of songs from their current mixtape Ode To Freshman Year. The crowd gave a generous, warm explosive applause when the group left the stage. As if to say “we might not have known you before but we do now and we definitely approve.” DCYC converted many an unfamiliar bystander into a fan last night.

Their set included their own songs “Dreamin’ California,” “Mister Dean,” “Hey You,” and “Surf’s Up” as well as a mixed cover of older hip hop classics through today’s current hits. With group member THX providing the beats, Kristo and A-Wolf hyped the crowd, covering snippets of Tupac’s “California Love,” Outkast’s “ATLiens,” Young Jeezy’s “R.I.P,” Problem’s “Like Whaaat” and Lil John’s “Outta Your Mind.”

The California natives showcased their multiple talents, with THX stepping out from behind the table and Kristo even playing the drums at one point. The passionate energy they brought to the stage resonated with the audience. With such an infectious live act, it’s clear that Drop City Yacht Club is poised to take the Hip-Hop world by storm. Their talents, likeability, charm, and dance oriented beats will also help propel them to a high level in the mainstream/pop world. This is evident with their wildly popular song “Crickets.” If you’re not a fan yet, you better jump on their train quick because the train is leaving the station, full speed ahead.

In the meantime, check out their music video for “Dreamin’ California” on YouTube.

Mack Wilds Releases New Music Video “Own It”

Actor Tristan Wilds who stars in the CW television remake 90210, is taking on a whole new industry…music. In this industry, he’s known as Mack Wilds and he is the first artist to sign to grammy nominated producer Salaam Remi’s label imprint group Re Mi Fa/Louder Than Life.

His new music video for the single “Own It” debuted on July 30 on MTV. The video is set to a New York backdrop, perhaps telling a story that will play out over a series of multiple videos, incorporating the theme of his debut album aptly titled New York: A Love Story. We say this because a caption at the beginning of the video says Day 1, but is never succeeded by a Day 2.

"Own It" was written by Wilds and R&B/pop superstar Ne-Yo, produced by Salaam Remi and Ne-Yo, and is currently available on iTunes. The album is scheduled for release on September 17. Interestingly enough Drake, another actor turned rapper, drops his new album the same day.

With such notable acting work in The Wire, Red Tails, and The Secret Life Of Bees, hopefully Mack Wilds will also continue his acting work, which seemed to be on an upswing.

Bruno Mars Performs Incredible Mashup At Staples Center

This past weekend we had the opportunity to attend Bruno Mars’ concert at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. Oh what a treat that was.

Aside from his impeccable vocals, dancing, band, and personality, there was one particular performance that stood out. He did an incredible mashup of songs from the 70s to the present. Blending the old school with the new, executing it effortlessly with perfection. Mashing up songs he wrote himself with covers from other artists.

It started with those 4 words from Prince…”you sexy mutha fucka.” Yes Bruno, that you are.

Then it quickly transitioned into James Brown’s “Sex Machine.” Then came the song everyone has been waiting for him to perform during the tour …”Money Make Her Smile” lyrics performed against what seemed to be the “Sex Machine” instrumentals. What?!

Then throw in a little hint of Rick James’ “Super Freak” to compliment the lyrics that say “she’s a super freak” in “Money Make Her Smile.”

Then he does the unthinkable …transitions into a rap song from today’s era backed by the 70s funk instrumentals. Trinidad James’ “All Gold Everything” never sounded funkier. If you’re not a true hip hop head it might have even gone unnoticed. Especially the horn section spitting bars from the song with a funk flare, “this ain’t for no f#@k ni#@a if you a real ni#@a then f#@k with me / this one for the hood ni#@as hipster bitches that shop at Lenox / dark skinned, light skinned, asian and white women / hypebeasts we know about don’t buy shoes unless they popular.” The infusion of soul that he put into a rap song …genius.

Parts of the horn section were reminiscent of Average White Band’s “Pick Up The Pieces” mixed with some Kool & The Gang flavor. Regardless, this amazing mashup deserves praise for the sheer creativity and musicality.

"Pop a molly I’m sweatin woo!"
